BIO 130, FALL 2000

COURSE ORGANIZATION:

There are two components to this course. The first part is the lecture portion of this course.  Lectures will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11:30 to 12:25 a.m., in Mosher 1.  The second part is the laboratory component.  Labs will be held from  1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays in BioScience 105.

The course additional resources available through our text, the 5th edition of Campbell's Biology.  The CD-ROM has useful exercises for each chapter but last year was a little difficult to set up because of a browser glitch; check the link for details and a crude but effective fix.  The Campbell web site is great.   You will need to activate your subscription, and the information you will need for this is found on the first page of your text.  Both the CD-ROM and the web site will be very helpful for you in learning the material and preparing for exams (always a concern...)

There will be a copying fee of $10.00 to cover the lab manual and class handouts.  You can purchase the lab manual, after Friday, September 8, from Ms. Amy Gonzalez in BioScience 100.

GRADING:

We will not give make up exams or extend deadlines without Dr. Pollock's and Dr. Linden's approval based on documented illness (doctor's note is required) or a comparable problem, such as a family problem.  Late assignments receive one half credit if turned in within 24 hours of the time due, and one quarter credit if turned in within 48 hours of the time due. After 48 hours, no credit will be given.

If you have specific physical or learning disabilities and require accommodations, please let us know early in the semester so that your learning needs may be appropriately met.  You will need to provide documentation of your disability to the Linda Whitney, Coordinator of Academic Support Services or Diana Linden, (who is also the Director of the CTL).

We feel very strongly about cheating in any phase of academic work, and will report suspected violations.  Remember that cheating includes plagiarism. See your student handbook for more information.

The point distribution for the course is shown below.   If you receive 90-100% of the total points, you will receive an "A" or "A-" in the class.  Scores of 80-89% of the total points will earn grades in the B range ("B+," "B," or "B-"); scores of 70-79% of the total points will earn grades in the C range; and scores of 60-69% of the total points will earn grades in the D range.
